Ride Safety and the Highway Code
In the course of researching the background to a member’s query about riding on the highways in a halter, (Parelli, string or otherwise) we have received the following comments from BHS and Insurance Company SEIB who insure our fun rides:
‘The Highway Code (page 19 Rule 52 Sep 2007) does stipulate a horse rider, whilst using the Highway must take all reasonable precautions to control their horse on the open road and use the relevant safety equipment to do so.
In relation to the insurance company they will always follow the law and therefore if the appropriate restraints (bridles) are not used this could effect a claim being made. Our recommendation on alternative bridles, bit-less bridles etc is that they are not used on the highway but only on private land. It is therefore wise that MBBA highlights that they are used at owner's risk and that using such bridles may contravene the Highway Code which could possibly hinder any Insurance Cover.’

As a result of this advice we will add a short statement to our future ride entry forms. However, in the clear knowledge and understanding of these facts, it always remains a rider’s personal choice to use whichever tack they wish.
