The Faulkland Ride

Sunday 15th May 2011

Mendip Bridleways & Byways Association May ride brought riders from all over Mendip to a new area close to Faulkland.

The weather was perfect; not too hot and with a decent breeze but not enough to remove carefully placed route tags and signs. Although the ground was firm, there was still a very good turnout and the parking stewards were kept busy directing lorries and trailers.

The huge venue field filled up quickly and riders got underway after 9.30am. There were three marked, different length routes. A 12 mile for the fit, 8 miles for those that just wanted a decent hack and 3 mile for lead rein and young horses. Stewards shepherded riders across the busy A 366 to enjoy the many bridleways in the area and the ride covered routes both South and North of the main road. The scenery was wonderful with splendid views and there were opportunities through the fields for good canters.

Back at the venue field, there was a small course of jumps and many of the riders enjoyed a clear round after their ride. The usual excellent tuck wagon and photographer were in attendance and everyone agreed that it had been a great ride. Photos of the ride and the jumping can be seen on www.rexphotography.co.uk.

This ride in particular, required a large number of stewards and MBBA is extremely grateful to Lynda le Ray and her huge team of stalwart supporters who made the ride possible. Thanks also go to generous local landowners who moved cattle, opened land and allowed gates to be tied back. All funds raised at MBBA rides go towards improving bridleways across Mendip and there are several improvements in the pipe line for the Faulkland area as a result of this ride.

Thank you to everyone who supports our rides - our next one is on Sept 25 at the Glastonbury Festival Site. One not to miss!

Ginnie Jones, Secretary
